What to do if sink drain does not align with trap? ›

If the tailpiece will not line up with the trap, move the trap into its original position, tighten the collar with the pipe wrench and obtain a flexible tailpiece extension for your drain. The size is typically 1 1/4-inch in the outer diameter of the plastic pipe.

For those who prize functionality, the off-center drain has many of the same benefits as a double-bowl sink. Just like a double-bowl sink, an off-center drain allows you to prepare food on one side of the bowl, while dishes dry on the other.

Food, grease and other debris may be stuck in the pipe, causing your sink to drain slowly or not at all because the water hits a snag on its way down. The fix is disassembling the pipe to clean out the gunk that's causing the blockage.

The double trap causes drainage issues because air becomes trapped between the two traps, and air is lighter than water. That causes the air to travel up as the water flows down, resulting in NO DRAINAGE.

Many designers agree that centering a kitchen sink under a window is the optimum placement, it often looks tailored and well-planned, however, this is not always practical. If you have a small kitchen with very little room for large reconfigurations, you may have more limited options in terms of optimum sink placement.

Moving the sink is almost always possible. The only problem with moving it is how the sink drain is vented. A drain must have a vent so that the water can move freely. Moving the drain and/or the water is very simple in most cases.

EXPERT TIP. The end of the faucet should be a few inches above the rim of the sink, or there will be splashing. The angle that the water hits the sink also has an effect on splashing. Aim for the water to hit the bottom of the sink, in the centre over the drain.

As indicated above, if the road slope drainage or associated road drainage systems are not properly designed and maintained, then the surface runoff will overflow onto the roads. If this surface runoff is not drained in time, water may overflow to the downhill areas and cause serious road slope disasters.

Don't forget about pipe slope. Use gravity's force to get your solid and liquid waste out of your home. All drain lines should have a minimum fall of 1/8 inch per foot of horizontal run.

Proper slope of gravity drainage and sewer pipes is important so that liquids flow smoothly, which helps transport solids away without clogging. A pipe that is too flat will prevent waste from flowing away.

Even if you are meticulous about never dropping things down the drain, you still need a p-trap under your sink to keep gas out. Sewer gases can rise through the drain pipes in your home, but the u-shaped bend in the p-trap collects water. This water blocks the gases from rising up into your sink.

Plumbing codes require a P-trap be installed anywhere there is an open drain line that expels wastewater into a drain waste-vent system. The P-trap traps solids that can clog the drain or sewer line. The P-trap stops sewer gases from backing into your home through the drain line.

To do so, place a bucket under the P-trap to prevent any water from spilling from the trap onto the floor. Use a pipe wrench or pliers to loosen and remove the slip bus at the end of the P-trap. Once these are removed, insert the drain snake into the pipe leading into the wall and auger.

If you don't run any water down the drain for a long time, the water inside the P-trap will eventually evaporate. It usually takes a month or more before the trap will fully dry out.

How much space should there be on each side of the sink? ›

Regardless of where you place your kitchen sink, you will want to make sure to have at least 20 to 24 inches of countertop space on each side of the sink. This will give you enough room to leave drying dishes, or to prepare food for cooking.

Having a sink perfectly centered in the middle of a bathroom vanity is nice for symmetry, but it minimizes the available amount of counter space. Pushing the sink off to one side effectively doubles the usable surface space on the opposite side, creating ample room for counter top storage.
